Grief & Loss Resources

This is where I will be listing some helpful resources (as I get that updated information) for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

*Camp G. K. Bear
is a program designed for children, grades K-6, who have had a significant person in their life die.  This significant person may include a parent, sibling, grandparent, friend, classmate, cousin, or others.

For all of us who have experienced any kind of loss, grief is a natural process that helps us deal with our loss.  People of all ages grieve, including children, and this can be a scary experience.  Children need to feel safe, understood, and accepted during this process.  Often times children do not understand what they are feeling, just that they do not feel “normal.”  They might not understand that their feelings of grief are serving a purpose and that purpose is to heal.

The staff and volunteers at Camp G. K. Bear have had special training and understand the uniqueness of a child’s grief journey in comparison to an adult’s.  Through special activities at camp, children will learn about death and grief.  They will also have a chance to recall and share special memories of their loved one who died.  There will be opportunities to discuss some of their feelings and how to handle them.  Children may learn new ways of coping with the changes that have come about and what it means to move on and live without their loved one.  Grief is not something we get over; it is something we learn how to live with.  In addition to learning about grief, children will be able to enjoy recreational activities and have FUN!

Camp G. K. Bear is offered from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm in Willmar (October 7, 2017).  The camp is staffed by  Rice Hospice social workers, and trained Rice Hospice volunteers.  There is no cost to attend Camp G. K. Bear.  Lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided.  Pre-registration is required.

Deadline for registration is Friday, September 29, 2017.

*Hearts of Hope -Family Grief Connection

Grieving families have an opportunity to attend our weekend camp together where they will experience a developmentally designed program for all members of their family.

Friday evening the family will spend time getting to know other families and the volunteers they will spend the weekend with. Saturday morning the families separate into groups with others their own age for fun camp activities and meaningful ceremonies. Sunday morning family members reunite for the close of camp and lunch before heading home.

Our hope is the weekend's activities will help family members heal and connect along their grief journey, finding meaning in the memories they share as they embark on life after the death of their loved one.  To register, visit the website at
