Hello Fourth Grade Family Members,

                I look forward to seeing you at conferences next Tuesday or Thursday! I utilize student-led conferences so bring your 4th grader with! This may be a new idea to you, but I am sure you will see how powerful it is for the student, family, and teacher to meet.  We will discuss progress, goals, and make plans to solve any issues.

Students have been busy preparing their individual binders with work samples and reports to show you when we meet. I cannot wait!

Math - Chapter 5 – Algebra: Use Multiplication and Division Facts – To finish

  • Skills – multiplication properties, expressions, order of operations, equations, predict and test, inequalities, find a rule
  • Vocabulary – zero/identity/commutative/associative/distributive properties of multiplication, orders of operation, inequality, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to

Math - Chapter 6 – Time and Temperature

  • Skills – tell time, elapsed time, elapsed time on a calendar, change units of time, sequence information, tell temperature, explore negative numbers
  • Vocabulary – second, minute, A.M., P.M., half hour, quarter hour, hour, elapsed time, calendar, time line, degree Fahrenheit, degree Celsius, negative numbers, positive numbers

 Reading - Unit 1 Week 5 – To Finish

  • Essential Question – How can starting a business help others?
  • Spelling –words with long /O/ sound on page 25 or 30  of your child’s spelling packet
  • Stories – Kids in Business, Starting a Successful Business, Dollars and Sense
  • Genre –  Persuasive Article, Procedural Text
  • Vocabulary – compassionate, enterprise, exceptional, funds, innovative, process, routine, undertaking
  • Skills – reread, main idea and details, suffixes 
  • Grammar – run-on sentences
  • Phonics – words with long /O/ sound 

Reading - Unit 2 Week 1

  • Essential Question – What are some messages in animal stories
  • Spelling –prefixes on page 31 or 36  of your child’s spelling packet
  • Stories – The Secret Message, The Fox and the Goat, The Fisherman and the Kaha Bird
  • Genre – folktale, fable
  • Vocabulary – attracted, dazzling, fabric, greed, honest, requested, soared, trudged
  • Skills – ask and answer questions, theme-central message or lesson, root words
  • Grammar – common and proper nouns
  • Phonics – prefixes

 AR/Computer

  • All the Right Type – computer based typing program. It teaches students the home row on a keyboard, correct strokes for each finger, and challenges them to develop increased word per minute (WPM) speed.
  • Quarter 2 goals (green page) sent home this week. Please sign and return.
